Counseling to help you cope and regain hope

Q: Is it normal for me to feel this upset?

A: Absolutely. The reasons you have for feeling devastated, sad, angry, anxious, traumatized, or scared due to the 2016 presidential election cycle and its results are far too numerous to list here. This isn't about politics, but instead about very real pain and fear that is being triggered in many individuals who are part of marginalized groups (LGBTQ+ individuals, women, people of color, immigrants, etc.)

Your feelings are completely justified, no matter how many people tell you to "move on". I'm here to help you process your feelings and find ways to cope.

Q: How can you help me?

A: Having someone to listen, support, and validate you is extremely healing, especially when you are struggling to find people who can understand how you are feeling or who won't minimize your pain. It is why so many people seek therapy when they are having such a difficult time and get overwhelmed trying to handle it alone.

Also, I am a licensed mental health counselor who is trained in treating anxiety, depression, and stress. I can help you discover healthy ways to manage your feelings so that they aren't so overwhelming.

People usually seek counseling when they are exhausted from struggling to cope with something that overwhelms their emotional resources. We can work together to fill up your emotional well with healing and hope, and I'll help you learn ways to keep filling that well after counseling ends with me.

Q: What kind of therapy do you practice?

A: I am a client-centered therapist and am here to warmly support you and help you draw upon your strengths to heal.

I teach my clients techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and utilize mindfulness based interventions, both evidence based practices. I want you to feel that you can lean on me for support while we strengthen your coping skills- until you can stand strongly on your own again. I want you to create a "coping skills toolkit" that you can continue to use in the future.

The beauty of counseling is that you receive the support you need during a difficult time, which replenishes you, and you also develop skills to learn to cope with future challenges. I am all about empowering you to grow!

Q: How long does therapy last?

A: This varies depending on everyone's particular circumstances and needs. If you are seeking post-election counseling, it may be shorter term if you begin to feel better quickly. However, some people may have deeper underlying issues to process (such as memories of sexual trauma or abuse that have been triggered) or need longer term support to help them address valid fears they have of potentially losing certain human rights.

I am here to help regardless of how much help you need. If you feel like you just need a session or two to feel better, then that's what we will do! If you need several sessions of therapy, I am happy to continue working with you until you feel ready to end therapy.

Q: How much do you charge?

You can see my fee schedule  here.  These are my standard rates, but I also offer a sliding scale fee to those who qualify.
Please call or e-mail me to inquire about payment options, because I want you to get the help you need, and I can provide you with a referral if you need it.

A regular session is 50 minutes to 1 hour. I do not directly accept insurance, but it may be an option for you to see me as an "out of network provider", which would allow you to obtain (partial to total) reimbursement from your insurance company for your out of pocket expenses.

Q: How does online and phone counseling work?

A: I use, which is a secure, HIPAA compliant video counseling platform. All you need is your personal computer with a microphone and webcam (either internal or external). I will send you a link to log in to your session, and you will not need to provide any private information to the website.

If you opt for phone counseling, I will call you at our scheduled session time.

Q: What do I do next?

A: You can either call or e-mail me to request a counseling session if you know you'd like to start counseling with me immediately.
If you'd like to chat briefly first to make sure you feel comfortable with me as your therapist, I always offer a free consultation. We can then schedule a session when it is convenient for you. Don't hesitate to ask me questions or reach out. That's why I'm here!
